In the UK, it’s Independent Bookseller’s Week. Indie bookshops all over the country are running special events and promotions.

As part of the celebration in said bookshops, for £1.99 you can buy this essay by author Ann Patchett, who started her own indie bookshop when the last one in her town closed down.

  1. An independent book shop in the United States is pretty much a thing of the past. The fee book stores that are left are chain stores.

  2. There seem to be no Indie bookshops in Birmingham so whilst I’d like to visit one…..I do my best to not support Amazon, so visit Waterstones as the closest thing to an Indie we have. I occasionally use abebooks to see those indies a bit further away from Birmingham, but of course, Amazon has a percentage ownership of that one too, so take their own cut of every transaction.

So it’s tougher to support the indies that many people think – even when you do, “the man” takes a cut!

  3. like Kaggy my nearest is about 15 miles we have a new second hand shop in chesterfield that I ve been using a good bit ,all the best stu

  4. Nordie is correct, we lost our last independent book shop in Birmingham two or three years ago. However, if you’re mobile there is an excellent indie about thirty-five miles away in Much Wenlock. The quality of the local teashops makes it worth taking a day trip out there.
